What's the Story?

In biopic A MAGNIFICENT LIFE, French playwright and filmmaker Marcel Pagnol (voiced by Matthew Gravelle) looks back at his career, reliving the past and remembering the lessons he learned from long lost friends and family.

There's no denying Pagnol's achievements in the first half of the 20th century. Outside France or entertainment history circles, though, A Magnificent Life suggests those achievements have faded from popular memory—and this film isn't likely to change that. But Pagnol's legacy matters less here than the film's outlook: a thoughtful look on learning from the people around you and carrying their wisdom after they're gone. As an animated film, it is often dreamlike, merging memory and fantasy across shifting art styles and tones—and this is where it succeeds artistically. As a drama, though, the low-stakes, unhurried wander through Pagnol's life events is unlikely to enthrall anyone who isn't already drawn to the subject.
