A Soweto Love Story
What's the Story?
In A SOWETO LOVE STORY, Sandile (Lunga Shabalala), a music producer with one hit under his belt, has been going with Sente (Motsoaledi Setumo) but hasn't popped the question for six years, and she leaves him. He's in debt to a loan shark and under the gun to make a new hit. His brother Menzi (Zenzelisphesihle Sparky Xulu) owns a restaurant but can't keep chefs because he is too rigid and unforgiving, and those personality traits discourage romantic partners as well. To improve the place, he has put up his mom's house as collateral. Sky (Ray Neo Buso) designs women's clothes from a studio in his mom's large house. Because he dresses flamboyantly, everyone believes he's gay, which he denies. In fact, he claims to have a secret lover. Mom is tired of waiting for a daughter-in-law and a grandchild and announces she will give her house to the first of them to get married by the end of the year—so the race is on for each to marry.
Is It Any Good?
This is a movie that slowly grows on you. A Soweto Love Story starts with a burst of clichés, overacting, and over-the-top manufactured emotion, but ends with a complete reversal of quality and a warm display of heartfelt, well-acted encounters that rescue the movie from itself. Early in the action, the mere announcement at a church service of a live band at a planned function commands the outsized reaction of wild applause and a standing ovation from the gathered congregants. Likewise, a restaurant owner implausibly forces a spoonful down the throat of a customer who says he doesn't like the soup, robbing the plot of any shred of credibility. A repo man comes for a debtor's $50,000 car but agrees to take a sofa instead. Even broad comedy has to make sense on some level.
The split in the movie's tone is partly attributable to a generational difference, as the younger actors never embrace the scenery-chewing style common to the older members of the cast, even when the over-the-top script seems to call for it. Subtlety generally takes over the movie's later minutes. When Menzi meets a woman as rigid as he is, he realizes that is not what he wants in a mate. Finally, although the plot still leaves enough large holes to drive a convoy through, responses become nuanced and more real as characters share seemingly true emotions with each other and the audience.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how it feels when a parent puts pressure on an adult child to get married. Do you think it would be helpful or a hindrance in real life? Why?
The brothers are put in a position of rivalry by the mom's proposal. What are their feelings for each other by the end of the movie? Have they changed? If yes, why?
One son dresses flamboyantly. Everyone assumes he is gay although he vehemently denies it. How does the movie want the audience to view being gay?
