What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that A Space in Time is a documentary about the daily life of a family whose two sons have been diagnosed with the progressive and fatal disease known as Duchenne muscular dystrophy. There are discussions that include thoughts about suicide, the reported end of relationships among couples who have a child born with Duchenne, and the likely forms of death, such as a heart attack, caused by the condition that has no cure. References include pills as prescribed medication to treat Duchenne, insulin use for diabetes, and injections for in vitro fertilization (IVF) pregnancy. Images include a photo featuring glasses of beer, the Taussig sons bathing in a tub, and the boys walking around naked outdoors on the family's property. What's the Story?
A SPACE IN TIME is a documentary about the journey of unconditional love taken by the film's co-director Nick Taussig and wife and artist Klara to create a comfortable quality of life for sons Theodor and Oskar, who have been diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The couple's efforts include a 20K run for 20 days to raise funds for healthcare equipment, bring awareness to others about the disease, and the renovation of a new home that will be wheelchair accessible, have nature right at its doorstep, and be located near the Taussigs' support group of family and friends.
Is It Any Good?
This powerfully intimate film portrait offers a candid look at how a family embraces their kids' disabilities. Award-winning co-director Nick Taussig and wife Klara don't shield their kids from the realities of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, the boys' diagnosed and fatal disease. "The word itself is synonymous with my kids now because I think we spend so much time as a family thinking about it and talking about it," says Nick in A Space in Time. "It's kind of our reality." The progressive disability enables the Taussigs to embrace acceptance and celebrate life, too. "Duchenne," admits Klara, "brought us together as a family." A Space in Time can also unite other families to have important conversations about the subject of disability inclusion and its impact on a society that offers accessibility to all.
