What's the Story?

ALLSWELL IN NEW YORK follows Nuyorican sisters Ida (Liza Colón-Zayas) and Daisy (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and their sister-in-law Serene (Daphne Rubin-Vega) as they navigate personal challenges while working to maintain a family unit. The sisters deal with fertility issues, illness, and a rebellious niece, all while Daisy works to keep her restaurant, Allswell, running smoothly.

This well-acted family drama celebrates the inner worlds of three Latina women as they go through the ups and downs of life. Allswell in New York's focus on women like Daisy, Ida, and Serene is quite unusual in Hollywood, where Latina women are often typecast and stereotyped. The beauty of Allswell in New York is that we see them as the complex people they are.

The film also highlights how family relationships can get complicated and sometimes end without the resolution we might like. And while telling stories with these types of (non)endings is realistic, it might be frustrating for viewers who like their stories to wrap up neatly. If you're OK with authentic ambiguity, though, Allswell in New York is a slice-of-life story that really digs into the discomfort that messy familial relationships can bring.
