Amazing Antoine
What's the Story?
AMAZING ANTOINE is a French documentary about the making of a French TV series about a woman who marries the father of a boy with multiple disabilities. The fictional story stars creator Cathleen Rouleau's actual stepson, Antoine Parent-Bedard. The drama is modeled on her experience blending her family with the family of Antoine's mom to provide the best care and support for the nonverbal Antoine, who has so-called level three autism, epilepsy, and various other disabilities. His younger brother, Charles, pours love into Antoine, noting that his big brother's mental development halted at the age of 3. The generally upbeat tenor could make this a good way to introduce disability to kids and young teens and to foster empathy for those who are differently abled.
Is It Any Good?
Amazing Antoine shows people at their most generous and giving. The people in Antoine's life, including parents, stepparents, siblings, caretakers, and teachers, all seemingly devote themselves to his care. Everyone here is endlessly patient and kind. The school he goes to is presented as one filled with teachers and aides who never lose their patience, never utter a cross word, and never get tired of the relentless hard work of caring for Antoine. If his care does actually go as smoothly as depicted here, at some point the filmmakers might have addressed what an extraordinary situation this is. Instead, it's presented as if anyone caring for someone with similar disabilities to Antoine's can take them skiing, on vacations, for equine therapy, and to elite schools, as the parents here do.
Some of these advantages seem out of reach for people of ordinary economic status, which is also never mentioned. The parents here have the good luck to be able to afford the large home, the personnel, and the goods and services that make Antoine's excellent care possible. No one is ever in a bad mood here, and Antoine is never anything but cheerful. Even when he is reluctant to be fed, he refuses the food politely, without a fuss, without being cranky or angry. Surely some of the people depicted in this documentary occasionally lose their cool. But since nothing like that is ever shown, this feels a bit misleading.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the extraordinary love and care Antoine receives. How do people support Antoine? Do you think it's realistic how loving and cheerful the caretakers are all of the time?
Antoine's parents both have other partners who help care for Antoine. What are some of the difficulties you can imagine in blending two families in order to provide great care for Antoine?
Do you think Antoine and his family and their resources are ordinary examples of what people with disabilities and their families are able to achieve together, or does it seem as if economic privilege makes their situation better than that of most families with similar issues?
