Sweet Non-Threatening Movie

Despite the site's review of this movie, it is quite suitable for a mature 12 year old. No violence or coupling of sex with violence. The main character (Amelie) is good hearted, and tries to help lonely people. There are some very funny scenes where she gets comic (and non-violent) revenge on a greengrocer who is mean to his retarded employee. The movie has excellent values. Despite the R rating given this film by the prudish MPAA, by way of contrast the move received a rating of all audiences by the Dutch film rating agency

Quirky and Gorgeous -A Must-See for Older Teens and Adults!

Amelie is a quirky, gorgeous, candy-hued film that makes the world just a little brighter! (Can you tell I'm a fan?) Filled with delightful characters, genuinely sweet messages about love and confidence, and fantastic Parisian scenery, this is not a film to miss! Although Amelie is filmed in a fairy-tale/candy shop way (the tone, cinematography, costuming, and etc. is charming and juvenile) there are themes that are anything but. There is a large helping of comedic sexual situations including characters employed at a sex-toy store and some very silly sex scenes. Also, in the style of French cinema, this film waxes on and on. The foreign language and the length mean that it won't entirely appeal to younger viewers, which is great because it really is not for them.

Beautiful story--and funny!!

I agree with every word from the reviewer rsdf--the R rating is prudish, and mature 12 year old could see it. It's just a wonderful movie. If you see only one foreign movie in a year's time, this is definitely the one.

OK for mature teenagers, wonderful visuals and story

Mature teenagers interested in foreign films will be fine. Scenes/language relating to the porn shop are probably the most sexually explicit.

Joyful film leaves you feeling nothing but good

In my book of "501 Movies to See Before You Die," it was said that whenever you ask anyone about "Amelie," they get a goofy smile on their face. It's true! Along with a really great message (making other people happy will make you happy in the long run) the movies works on so many levels. There's the romantic, accordion-playing French music that puts you smack dab in the middle of Paris, the brilliant green-tinged cinematography that earned an Oscar nomination that makes you feel like you're in a fantasy, and...just that opening. Has a foreign film ever had that strong of a fairytale opening? It's just magical. Audrey Tautou is the perfect combination of adorable, innocent with a smirk and kindness as the titular character. Through an intricate plot of photo booth scraps, a diner filled to the brim with eccentric characters and the Glass Man who repaints the same thing every year, you get to know these characters along with laughing along with them and really just enjoying bursts of happiness and wonder onscreen. It's one of the most famous foreign films of all time, and after just one viewing you'll see why.

Not sure why the producers had to sexualize and degrade women by constantly showing breasts throughout the movie. I did not see any exploited men in this movie. Has a great plot and story line with a good purpose. Why they had to exploit women, I am guessing to boost profits in case the story was a fail.

artful movie - doesn't need the sex scenes

i was surprised to see many rating this for teens - and in one case "a mature 12 year old." this is a lovely movie that could have been so much better with the absence of sex scenes and full frontal nudity. it was surprising and graphic. not something most parents would want to watch with their teenagers. i agree with CSM often. but i would rate this one for over 18.
