A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that American Reject is a comedy about what happens to a third-place contestant in a popular reality show singing competition. There's excessive drinking by adults, mostly played for comedy, including binge-drinking during the daytime. Several scenes take place in a bar, and adults are shown drinking wine at night. Strong language includes "f---ing" and "s--t." Sex and violence are briefly paired in a photoshoot played for comedy. A woman's bare breast is accidentally exposed in a nonsexual situation. Parental loss is a minor theme: Kay's father and Anna's mother both died in the past. A female character is referred to as large at size 10. The villains imply that a woman in her mid-30s is too old to win a singing competition.

What's the Story?
AMERICAN REJECT is the story of what happens to Kay (Kathleen Elizabeth Monteleone), who made it to third place on America's top reality TV singing competition but was then voted off the show. The producers need extra content, though, so they send her back to her hometown with a cameraman (Frank Monteleone) who follows her every move. With nothing better to do, she reluctantly agrees to be in the town's amateur theatrical fundraiser. Of course, the TV show calls Kay back the day before the fundraiser. Will Kay stay and help her friends and community, or will she be drawn back into the spotlight on national TV?
Is It Any Good?
This is a genuinely funny comedy thanks to solid acting and a tight script. American Reject also offers warmth, character growth, drama, and moments that tug at the heartstrings. The premise of a reality TV competition, with lots of behind-the-scenes footage and backstage drama, adds some teen appeal. But the main characters are in their 30s, and special appearances by Billy Ray Cyrus and Juvenile skew appeal toward an older audience.
Some of the plot is contrived and predictable, and a happy ending is never in doubt. But it's a fine choice for families with mature teens who can handle excessive alcohol use and strong language.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the alcohol use in American Reject. Does it make drinking seem fun? Does playing it for comedy make a difference?
What about the strong language? Is it realistic? What are your own, and your family's, values about swear words?
Reality competition shows have been popular for a long time. What do we love about them? Do they have an effect on how you see yourself, how you relate to others, or how competitive you are?
