Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
In AND THEN COME THE NIGHTJARS, the friendship between vet Jeff (Nigel Hastings) and farmer Michael (David Fielder) is tested when an epidemic means the farmer's cows must all be killed.
Is It Any Good?
Adapted from an award-winning play with just two main characters, this British drama is a talky -- and incredibly sweary -- movie. Transported from the stage to the farm, the relationship between widowed farmer Michael and Jeff, a vet living with alcohol addiction, makes And Then Come the Nightjars a mostly enjoyable watch. Fielder and Hastings put in good performances as their problems are explored sensitively, and the foul-mouthed comedy works for the most part. But although its well-meaning, it never manages to shake off its play origins, leaving it feeling lightweight as a story for the big screen.
