Depressing movie about 1980's New York City
I really , really did not like this movie at all. I had expected a somewhat different story from the previews. I did not like the way it made New York City look - like a dreary, horrible, joyless place that no sane person would like to live in. I don't know if New York City is like that in real life but now I would rather not even visit that city. The family was pretty awful with the grandfather and the young boy who is the main character being the only somewhat likeable family members (the mother was okay but not strong enough to stand up to her husband). The brief glimpses of horrible political figures and the racism made it even more depressing. I recommend not seeing it unless someone wants to be depressed or might find the young boy Paul's interest in art something that makes the movie worth watching. Not for young children, mainly because they probably wouldn't understand much of it and it does not make family life look appealing or nurturing.
