What's the Story?

In BAD INFLUENCE, a mysterious wealthy father hires an "ex-convict" (Alberto Olmo) to look after and protect his daughter. The young man, four years older than Reese (Elea Rochera), doesn't come from money and needs the job. As their relationship deepens, they'll have to navigate the clash of their different worlds.

Perhaps better suited as a web novel, this film offers a messy and illogical story. So much about Bad Influence screams its young adult source material, but the gravity of this movie's presentation doesn't match. For example, central to the plot is a mystery about who actually is the one harassing and stalking Reese online and on social media. But no one, of course, acts appropriately or intelligently after any instance of harassment, not after a rock shatters a home bedroom window nor after Reese receives a tin of dozens of baby teeth nor after Reese has to flee a car that was purposefully rigged to catch fire. Cops are never called, and Reese's father doesn't exactly take great pains to keep his daughter safe, even after these events.

Further, what high school just allows a young man, 22 years old, to enroll and join the teenage student population? Which is only to mention the ick feeling many viewers might generally get regarding Reese and Eros's relationship in the first place, as most of their relationship develops while Eros is 21 and 22 years of age and Reese is 17. Sure, they only have sex after her 18th birthday party, but this doesn't exactly help. Lastly, the film's ending needs work. A sudden and inexplicable death feels thrown together last-minute. While it tries to wrap up a lot of character backstory development, it still falls flat because the film never fully or adequately explores these characters.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about online and social media harassment. How does Bad Influence portray this kind of abuse? Is there anything Reese could have done to help fight this kind of behavior?

  • How does this film portray smoking and drinking? Why do you think the film uncritically promotes both as signs of "coolness"?

  • Why do you think Reese and Eros fall for each other? Did their relationship and dynamic feel genuine? Why, or why not?
