What's the Story?

BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER takes place in Macao, "the gambling capital of the universe." It's here we meet Lord Doyle (Colin Farrell), a con man pretending to be a British aristocrat. In truth, he's a debt-ridden gambler desperate for that one "big win" to get himself out of trouble. Adding to his woes is investigator Betty (Tilda Swinton), who has debts of her own to collect from him. In the meantime, he's fallen for casino hostess Dao Ming (Fala Chen).

Kids say ( 1 ):

This is a stylistic psychological thriller that delivers on multiple fronts. Ballad of a Small Player is light and funny in parts, while also offering romance, grit, and spiritual elements. But above all, it's a sad, candid character study of a man in the grips of gambling addiction. Director Edward Berger (Conclave) seamlessly balances these elements into a coherent, compelling production. Swinton appears in a quirky supporting role that somehow fits the film's unique tone without disruption. But what ties it all together is Farrell, who brings Lord Doyle to life in magnificent fashion. He sells both the character's facade—his pretension and aristocracy, complete with a deliberately over-the-top accent—and the vulnerability from his addiction. The vibrancy of Macao, with its neon lights and glamour, contrasts effectively with poverty-stricken surroundings and elements of historical folklore, making the setting feel like a character in its own right.

  • Talk about the strong language used in the movie. Did it seem necessary, or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?

  • How were drinking, smoking, and drugs portrayed? Were there consequences? Did it glamorize them? Why does that matter?
