What's the Story?

In BANK OF DAVE 2: THE LOAN RANGER, Dave (Rory Kinnear) is enjoying the success of taking on the financial world to set up his own fairer bank. Appearing on TV and radio shows to tell his story, he's met by a caller describing her nightmare experience with a payday loan. Unable to shake his concern, Dave researches other people who've been impacted and soon he's teaming up with local Citizens Advice volunteer Oliver (Amit Shah) and U.S. financial journalist Jessica (Chrissy Metz) to try and take the companies down.

Everyone loves an underdog story, and it's easy to root for this film's central character, an unassuming man with a heart of gold. Bank of Dave 2: The Loan Ranger steps back into similar territory as the original, but now that Dave runs his own bank and has become a minor celebrity from his success, there's something less engaging about beginning the cycle again. There's no doubting the importance of his mission in taking on payday loan companies, but the stakes never feel as high and the payoff loses its emotional impact a little. That said, just like the original, it's full of warmth and likable characters—the introduction of Shah and Metz into the mix adds a fun dynamic—and stories that show the very human impact behind the shocking statistics. Fans of the first film or, in fact the band, will enjoy the sequel coming full circle with an appearance from Def Leppard, and cameos from popular British TV presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary add further star power. It's an enjoyable movie with a strong message, it just doesn't maintain quite the same interest level as the first.
