Tender, very quirky sophomore effort
There's a lot to love about "Beginners," so here's what I didn't like: at times I felt the movie was too in love with itself. Its quirkiness was pervasive through the whole thing, and sometimes that felt like an experiment rather than a movie about relationships and love. Besides this, it's a very original film, I can't think of another like it content wise; it's supposed to be very autobiographical of writer/director Mike Mills. McGregor's mopey, charming Oliver finds love and finally hope in Laurent's Anna, and finds acceptance with his finally out dad, a touching and Oscar winning Christopher Plummer. Plus, any movie with a subtitled dog can't not be adorable.
