What's the Story?

In BRICK (2025), Tim (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Olivia (Ruby O. Fee) are trying to get out of a marriage funk. While Olivia is ready to move on, Tim is stuck in the past. But when they wake up one day to find all the doors and windows of their apartment boarded up with mysterious bricks, they have to work together to figure out what's going on.

The premise of this thriller is intriguing and comes out of nowhere. But by the time Brick (2025) reaches its third act, some viewers might not care about how it finishes. To be fair, there's lots to appreciate here: The performances are generally strong, there's an emotional core and backstory to the primary couple, and the proceedings are beautifully shot and composed.

But the initial intrigue (is it aliens, the government, a dream, an experiment, a game, or "rich people" watching them for entertainment, as the characters imagine?) eventually gives way to a different question altogether, which for many might be a letdown. Others might find the film's conventional casting (Black, queer, and Middle Eastern/North African characters are killed and/or drug addicts and killers) problematic.

  • If you were in Tim and Olivia's position, would you have done the same things and made the same decisions? What would you have done differently?

  • Are you satisfied with the ending? Why, or why not?
