Buffalo Kids
What's the Story?
In BUFFALO KIDS, Irish orphans Tom (Conor MacNeill) and Mary (Alisha Weir) travel to the United States to find their uncle. On their journey across the country they find new friends and face off against train-robbing bandits.
Is It Any Good?
This animated tale is a fun romp through the Wild West, packed with thrilling action and memorable characters, and a voice cast that includes Stephen Graham, Gemma Arterton, and Sean Bean. But Buffalo Kids is far more than just entertainment—it addresses disability representation in a landmark way for children's animation. The film is dedicated to the loving memory of Nico Solís, son of writer-director Pedro Solís García. Nico was born with cerebral palsy and inspired the character of Nick. This personal experience gives the film an authenticity. While it doesn't shy away from depicting some characters' negative perceptions of disability, these views are overshadowed by the value of inclusivity, kindness, and understanding. Characters show curiosity toward Nick but also genuine affection and warmth, modeling how to interact with disabled peers as equals. The result is a film that doesn't just include disability representation, it demonstrates what meaningful inclusivity looks like, potentially paving the way for other animated films to follow its example.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Buffalo Kids portrays disability. What were the differences in how the characters saw Nick? What do you think the filmmakers were trying to say about how people living with disabilities are sometimes treated? Why does representation matter?
Which characters showed teamwork, perseverance, curiosity, courage, great communication skills, and compassion? Why are these important character strengths to have? Can you think of a time when you've shown these traits in your own life?
Discuss the film's violence. Was it exciting and fun, or did it feel scary? How does animated violence differ from live-action? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?
