What's the Story?

CHRISTOPHER: A BEAUTIFUL REALLIFE follows Danish pop star Christopher as he gets ready for the biggest concert of his career at Copenhagen's Royal Arena while also going on tour and leaving his wife Cecilie and their two small kids at home. The film moves between the stage and his home, giving a look at his career milestones, the pressures of touring and recording, and the quieter moments of family life that shape who he is away from the crowds.

If you're not familiar with Christopher, this documentary never really shows why he's popular or what makes his artistry unique. Instead, it plays like a 90-minute promo reel designed to hype fans about his tour (you can even buy the Royal Arena video online after you're done watching). We're told about his other Netflix project being number one in several countries, but we're never invited to actually see him beyond the glossy image of a beautiful, rich, White man adored everywhere he goes.

What could have been fascinating (the tension between his ego being bruised when only 400 people show up to one gig and his elation at filling a 12,000-seat stadium in Korea) is reduced to background noise. The film prefers to show him longing to be home with his kids, which might have been touching if it weren't presented so blandly. The moments with his wife promoting her book feel just as staged, since she never even explains what it's about (it plays more like a sales pitch). Viewers may be left with a bitter aftertaste, wishing the documentary had the honesty and vulnerability of other Netflix music portraits of artists like Lady Gaga, Anitta, or Jennifer Lopez.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about how the film shows Christopher trying to balance his music career with his relationship and family life. What do you think is most challenging about finding that balance?

  • Christopher and Cecilie share both happy and difficult moments. How do you think being open about struggles can make relationships stronger? Do you think there are topics they shouldn't discuss?

  • The documentary gives us a look at the glamorous parts of fame but also the more stressful ones. What surprised you the most about what life as a pop star is like?
