What's the Story?

After winning a novelty boxing competition in the late 1980s, high school basketball player Christy Salter (Sydney Sweeney) is discovered by the World Boxing Federation and paired with boxing trainer Jim Martin (Ben Foster). The two marry, and their union helps CHRISTY become the first prominent professional female boxer in the United States—and create a path for women in the sport. But Jim wants control over his wife's success ... and his wife.

This biopic about the United States' first famous female boxer is a one-two punch: One is Sweeney's knockout performance, and two is this surprising story that most viewers aren't likely to know. While many sports biopics are about grit, determination, and triumph, Christy steps into a different ring—one in which the fight is for identity, dignity, and survival.

Some younger viewers may be surprised by the oppressive attitudes toward women and LGBTQ+ individuals depicted here. Watching parents, neighbors, and employers shaming Christy for who she loves lands with a real gut punch. When she realizes she's good at boxing, it's easy for viewers to infer that the sport provides her with an outlet to release the rage she's not allowed to show in her life—and her success is an opportunity, in her eyes, to prove her worth to her family. What follows feels inevitable, a psychological profile in which consequential defeat seems certain. But Christy never stays down for the count, and teens will realize that her tenacity is what makes her a champion.
