What's the Story?
Former Mexican Cop Garza (Omar Chaparro) is still mourning the death of his partner when his girlfriend, Maria (Aislinn Derbez), is kidnapped by crime lord Santos (Erick Elias). Santos frames Garza, who winds up in jail, but he escapes, and -- lonely and disgraced -- heads to San Diego. There he finds Vic (Joey Morgan), a geeky American hacker who may lead Garza to Santos -- and Maria.
Is It Any Good?
COMPADRES' convoluted story includes several shoot outs and chase scenes -- and even some genuinely interesting moments, but not enough of them. Chaparro is fun to watch, but he has no chemistry with Morgan, which is too bad, because the second half of Compadres is about the two of them trying to find Santos and Maria. Fans of action-packed crime comedies may enjoy it, but it's not for younger kids or adults squeamish about blood and bullets.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Compadres' violence. Is it necessary to the story? How does the movie's comedic tone affect the impact of the violence? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?
How does the movie portray women? What message does that send?
Do you consider any of the characters role models? Why or why not?
Garza has to navigate a corrupt society. Have you ever been in a situation where you felt like there's no one you could trust? What did you do?
