What's the Story?
Kat (Bryce Dallas Howard) is a struggling actor teaching comedy improv classes in London when a police officer (Sean Bean) approaches her about working on a sting operation in DEEP COVER. The officer seems to think improv actors will have the ability to fake their way into a dangerous drug ring. Kat recruits two of her students—wannabe actor stuck working in commercials, Marlon (Orlando Bloom), and tech loser looking to make friends, Hugh (Nick Mohammed). Together, they miraculously convince drug dealer Fly (Paddy Considine) that they are hardened criminals, and he gets them even deeper into the underworld. How will they find their way out?
Is It Any Good?
With a trio of likable actors and plenty of laughable scenarios, this film has its moments but doesn't totally hit the mark. The pacing is slightly off at the start of Deep Cover, resulting in lines of dialogue and situations that should and could be funny but elicit chuckles rather than laughs. The film warms up, though, and the improbability of the entire setup builds to a satisfying enough conclusion as the characters step out of their overly scripted archetypes and create more authentically human moments. Bloom steals the show as the excessively serious and slightly unhinged method actor, while Considine's delinquent-with-a-heart ("I'm a criminal, not a villain") is endearing.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the idea of improv actors using their skills in real life, as happens in Deep Cover. Could you envision other scenarios where improv actors could use their talents?
How does the film balance comedy and action? Does the violence match the tone of the film, or does it ever go too far, in your opinion? Why?
What lessons do you think the main characters learn from their experiences?
