Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy
What's the Story?
DIDDY: THE MAKING OF A BAD BOY interviews friends and associates from Sean Combs' life, building a study of the upbringing, life, and character of the music producer and artist. The film covers his childhood, college and internship years, his rocketing to fame, and his status as a mogul before diving into the 2023 accusations of sex trafficking and drug-fueled orgies known as "freak-offs." Interviewees include his best childhood friend, friends from college and young adulthood, former colleagues, Combs' former bodyguard, attorneys, alleged victims, journalists, and more. These are complemented by new, behind-scenes cellphone footage from sources as well as archive images of Combs and others.
Is It Any Good?
Timely and part of a crowded field of recent or in-the-works Diddy documentaries, this film capitalizes on a controversial moment but might leave you feeling dissatisfied. The obvious timeliness of Diddy's arrest will give Diddy: The Making of a Bad Boy a built-in audience, and it delivers horrific victim accounts as well as significant insight from colleagues and friends on the music icon's childhood and upbringing.
But ultimately the documentary feels like a rushed work. It's haphazardly broken into "Acts," but the narrative jumps around in time. A professional offers armchair psychoanalysis of motive. Interviewees allude to conspiracies and more information they're withholding. Nearly every section is followed by a disclaimer about unproven or disputed facts. If that weren't enough to discourage viewers, then the behavior at the core of this tale and the accusations swirling around the music industry will.

What do you make of Tim Patterson's comment that Combs has been "monsterized," but "monsters are made"?
