What's the Story?
DISCO, IBIZA, LOCOMÍA shows the rise and fall of the title band, which pushed gender and sexual orientation boundaries in the Spanish music industry. The story follows Xavi Font (Jaime Lorente), an ambitious fashion designer with dreams of fame who strikes luck when a famous producer (Albero Ammann) sees the potential of the dance group he's created. Egos clash and relationships are torn as the band becomes an overnight sensation, leading to a legal battle that changes them forever.
Is It Any Good?
This Spanish biopic is best appreciated by those familiar with the band and their story. Donning extravagant costumes and oversized fans and singing in robotic tones set against modern disco, Locomía became a strange musical sensation that set the Spanish music world on fire in the late 1980s and early '90s. In Disco, Ibiza, Locomía, director Kike Maíllo attempts to evoke the lightning in a bottle nature of a band that happened almost by accident. Set against the backdrop of decadent Ibiza, it follows a group of mostly queer men determined to make their dreams come true in a country that was still grappling with the legacy of Franco's brutal dictatorship.
Fast-paced and splattered with outlandish visual touches, the film delivers its message of tolerance, acceptance, and LGBTQ+ rights without lionizing the characters, instead showing them as flawed human beings overcome by the temptations of fame. Despite doing a great job of telling the story of the band in a Wiki format, the film doesn't give enough screen time to characters like Lurdes, who adds a moving human touch that sees beyond the sequins and drugs. As played by the extraordinary Suárez, Lurdes provides much needed warmth and compassion to a story that could've easily become an ode to excess.
