What's the Story?
In DOOM OF LOVE, Firat (Boran Kuzum) is forced to close his ad agency due to a dying business. A friend convinces him to go on a meditation retreat to take his mind off of things. There, he meets the enchanting Lidya (Pinar Deniz), a singer who performs with her musician partner, Yusuf (Yigit Kirazci). Firat returns home and takes a sales job he's not interested in but needs in order to pay off his debt. On a business trip, he runs into Lidya and Yusuf again. This time, he abandons his old life, leaves his debt behind, and decides to head out on the road with the pair. This leads to a possible romance with Lidya that has just begun to blossom when tragedy strikes.
Is It Any Good?
This Turkish melodrama, which ventures into telenovela territory, is saved by its attractive cast and locations. Doom of Love offers a familiar story of 20-somethings leaving behind a respectable, professional life for something less conventional but more personally and spiritually rewarding. Kuzum, Deniz, and Kirazci are a gorgeous trio, and they make beautiful music. The film floats when they're performing or at soothing meditation retreats, journeying freely in their convertible across stunning scenery, and falling in love. More pedestrian scenes of character development, particularly those involving other family and friends, are clunky, and the twist ending is overly contrived.
