Double Blind
What's the Story?
In DOUBLE BLIND, Claire (Millie Brady) joins a group of strangers for a five-day clinical trial at Blackwood Pharmaceuticals. Confined to a white-walled basement with no contact with the outside world, the group becomes increasingly paranoid when the parameters of the trial suddenly change. They're tasked with seeing how long they can stay awake -- and the outcome is life or death.
Is It Any Good?
Tense from the get-go, this debut feature from director Ian Hunt-Duffy and writer Darach McGarrigle combines claustrophobic paranoia with body horror in an effective way. Double Blind has, at its core, a simple premise: fall asleep and you die. Between the brain-altering pills the human lab rats have taken and their sheer exhaustion, it feels inevitable they'll begin to question what's real or imagined, who's trustworthy or traitorous. Solid performances all round keep those questions hanging in the audience's mind, too, with twists and turns making sure everyone both sides of the screen stays on their feet. DoP Narayan Van Maele creates a warren-like underground lair, illuminated by ominous lighting and shadowy corners that tempt the characters' exhausted brains to run wild with visions and traumatic flashbacks. There's a level of social commentary as well, about "big pharma" not being held to account and certain people being seen as more expendable than others. Characters are chosen because of economic hardship, social isolation, self-destructive behavior -- they're not only more willing to take a risk, but maybe nobody will miss them if they disappear. This is a well-crafted, tight 90 minutes that will keep viewers hooked and shows great potential from the up-and-coming filmmakers.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the location of Double Blind. How did keeping the action in one place affect the atmosphere? Can you think of other horror movies where characters are trapped as a group? How do they compare?
Discuss the violence in the movie. How did it make you feel? Was it exciting? Shocking? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?
Did you find the movie scary? What's the appeal of scary movies? Why do some people like to be scared?
Talk about some of the language used. Did it seem necessary or excessive? What did it contribute to the movie?
Claire showed perseverance during the film. Why is that an important character strength, particularly in the situation she found herself in? Can you think of times you've shown perseverance in your own life?
