What's the Story?

DOWNTOWN OWL, North Dakota, population approximately 800, is where 40-something Julia Rabia (Lily Rabe) from Milwaukee finds herself applying for a teaching position at the local high school. She's giving her husband some time apart so that he can at long last finish his dissertation. And she's also hoping this experience may help her find herself. There's a bit of culture shock as Julia gets to know the townsfolk and the students and staff at the school. And quite a bit of attraction to hunky local football hero Vance Druid (Henry Golding). For a while it looks like Julia takes a very wrong turn, but with the gentle guidance of town elder Horace Jones (Ed Harris), things start getting better, until the blizzard hits.

Is It Any Good?

This delightfully quirky yet warm and gentle fish-out-of-water story has both real laughs and emotional depth. The best of Downtown Owl's humor comes from the hilariously blunt, colorful characters who say what they mean. Emotional depth comes from learning more about the characters' lives and what they're dealing with. The acting is solid, if not stellar, and screen charisma is well distributed throughout teen, adult, and older adult characters.

Teen appeal comes from funny classroom scenes, quirky students and their relatable problems, and excessive drinking that looks like a lot of fun. The acting, directing, and script are all solid, with one or two minor flaws that are easy to overlook. Best for mature teens who can handle the drinking, language, and strong themes.
