What's the Story?
A young Chilean fan named Fran (Geraldine Neary) knocks on the door of Argentinian pop singer Martina's door with an outlandish story about sharing a father and DNA testing. In DRY MARTINA, the singer (Antonella Costa) immediately falls for the girl's young boyfriend (Pedro Campos). Martina explains that since her teens, she has only ever felt free while having sex and has sought out as much of it as possible, picking up guys in bars, restaurants, and on the street. She likes to wear short shorts, high-heeled boots, sheer unbuttoned shirts over long-line black lace bras, an outfit that makes her look like a streetwalker. Now her vagina has gone dry, and she's desperately and unashamedly seeking someone who will get her back on track sexually. Strange and unlikely family connections in Chile result in a DNA test, the results of which don't really change anything, including Martina.
Is It Any Good?
This is a story about a silly, reckless, and basically selfish woman, and that fact presents a problem that some viewers may not be able to overcome: Why care? That said, Antonella Costa's performance as Martina is perfectly fine, but parents may question the appropriateness of this for even older teens. The worst consequences of Martina's promiscuity in Dry Martina include emptiness and loneliness, but her nonchalance about seducing complete strangers could result in far worse, violent outcomes that aren't mentioned here.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about Martina's claim that she only ever felt free when she was in bed with a man. Why do you think she has sex with lots of partners? What do you think she means by feeling "free"?
Martina picks up guys in the park, in bars, on the street. Do you think her behavior is safe? Healthy? Why or why not?
Martina herself says that it's unforgivable to have slept with her friend's ex-boyfriend. Yet she did not hesitate to do so. What do you think about her actions?
