What's the Story?

EENIE MEANIE centers on Edie, who's taught at an early age how to drive a getaway car by her troubled father (Steve Zahn). Flash-forward more than a decade, and Edie, now an adult (Samara Weaving), is trying to fly straight after a short career as a driver for criminals committing heists. When she finds out she's pregnant by her no-good ex-boyfriend, John (Karl Glusman), Edie is pulled back into the underworld to help dig him out of trouble—again. Crime boss Nico (Andy Garcia) has her driving the getaway car for a casino job, but of course nothing will go according to her personal or professional plan.

This Cleveland-set tragicomic heist thriller feels pulled from the Tarantino playbook of lethal action backed by witty banter, easy coolness, and memorable cameos. Eenie Meanie co-stars Weaving and Glusman have a lot of potential as doomed lovers from the wrong side of town. Edie's childhood trauma gives her both a toughness and a vulnerability that help explain her actions. Early information about a pregnancy also infuses her relationships and observations with greater significance. But these elements don't have time to fully develop, and viewers never really learn much about John. The film's actors and action make for an engaging watch, but the characters deserved more development and certainly a better resolution.
