What's the Story?

ELDORADO: EVERYTHING THE NAZIS HATE chronicles the existence of the Berlin, Germany, queer nightclub during the 1920s. The film also focuses on the rise of Nazism to eliminate not only queer but also Jewish people. Firsthand interviews, archival footage and photographs, and reenactments offer a look at life and injustices toward gay, lesbian, and trans people and others during Europe's changing political power a century ago.

Gay director Benjamin Cantu shares a heartbreaking and educational portrait of European queer life in the 1920s–1940s. In Eldorado: Everything the Nazis Hate, the German nightclub is a community and safe haven for gay, lesbian, and trans people. The popular location, says historian and curator Dr. Klaus Mueller, "heralds a new freedom" where individuals "can be free and self-determined for the first time."

Homosexuals, however, are soon seen as criminals and perverts during the emerging political rise of Nazism, and at a moment's notice, intolerance rears its ugly head. "You can have these liberties," notes historian and queer media expert Zavier Nunn, and at times, "they can be taken from you."
