What's the Story?

In EVERYTHING IS ILLUMINATED, Jewish American Jonathan (Elijah Wood) travels to Ukraine determined to find the woman who saved his grandfather during World War II. With help from eccentric tour guide Alex (Eugene Hutz) and Alex's antisemitic grandfather (Boris Leskin), he journeys to a remote village once destroyed by the Nazis. What begins as a simple search for closure becomes a profound journey of discovery for all three men.

This biographical comedy-drama is the directorial debut of celebrated actor Liev Schreiber. Everything Is Illuminated's narrative offers a fresh perspective on Holocaust history—a journey of discovery that shows how important connecting with one's past can be, especially for descendants of displaced people. Wood plays Jonathan with appropriate curiosity, while Hutz brings eccentric energy as Alex, whose family initially exploits Jewish tourists before confronting their own prejudices. But the film struggles with its tonal balance. The eccentric road trip elements clash with the profound historical trauma being explored, creating a disconnect that prevents the emotional moments from feeling earned. Despite addressing important themes about heritage and moral awakening, the film's whimsical approach undermines its more serious ambitions. While Schreiber shows promise behind the camera, the competing tones never quite harmonize into a satisfying whole.
