This movie throws two popular genres (romcom, true crime) and a party game into a pop culture blender, and the satirical mixture comes out clunky but pleasant enough for a Gen Z girls' night in. F Marry Kill feels made for a distracted group watch, with friends splitting off into separate conversations, texting, perhaps swiping on their own dating apps, and then paying attention again to cheer, boo, or make a snarky comment. Sometimes, we need movies like that.

Director Laura Murphy comes from the world of sketch and improv comedy, and Eva and her friends have a foundation in reality (sort of like a Tina Fey character), but the situations that Eva puts herself in are absurd (more like an Amy Poehler character). The actors riff off the script, creating genuine laugh-out-loud moments, and Hale's comedic timing shines. That lightness contrasts with the movie's horror elements, which are never realistic but at the same time are relatable. The film underlines the fear of trying to find love online, especially for a woman. Who are the people behind the smiling bathroom selfies? What's their real intention? Could they be a killer or a rapist? Is it worth the gamble? And is there even a choice when it comes to dating anymore? For a single man, the movie addresses the challenge of how to break through the suspicion to show that he's just a guy, putting himself out there, hoping to find someone to love him. Murphy acknowledges these feelings, but they're not unknown—singles are well aware of both sides of the issue. F Marry Kill is, in the end, like most dating app interactions: attractive packaging but ultimately shallow, disappointing, and forgettable.

  • Are the characters' actions realistic, or preposterous? Comedy can be made from both: What are some examples of absurdist comedy or farce? What are examples of comedy made from more realistic scenarios and behavior? Do you prefer one over the other?

  • Does the movie glamorize drinking, smoking pot, or casual sex? Are there realistic consequences? Why does that matter?

  • How do Eva and her friends demonstrate positive communication? They sometimes tease each other—how can this also be an effective way to communicate a message, if it's delivered with good intentions?

  • What does F Marry Kill indicate is the the risk of online dating for women? What about for men?
