What's the Story?

Married couple Jérôme (Franck Dubosc) and Marie (Suzanne Clément) are visiting Daniel's ailing father Gilbert (Jean Reno) in his village at the start of FAMILY PACK. They're with their three children: Claire (Lisa Do Couto Texeira), from Jérôme's previous marriage; Theo (Raphael Romand), from Marie's; and Louise (Alizee Caugnies), who is their daughter together. They're settling in for a family visit when they decide to play a board game that involves a kind of role-playing of medieval characters. Next thing they know, they find themselves inside the game, in the Middle Ages in a village terrorized by wolves. How will they escape and get back to 2024?

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Don't expect too much from this frothy, French family film, and you'll do just fine. Family Pack is downright goofy. Sometimes the silliness works, other times it's acceptable only if you remind yourself that the target audience is kids. The imposition of PC modern-day values is heavy-handed, but the actors are likable, and the overall adventure provides just enough excitement to keep you watching until the end.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the idea of time travel, as in Family Pack. If you could travel to any historical period, where would you go and why?

  • Which parts of this fantasy seemed the most far-fetched, and which made more sense to you? Why?

  • What modern-day values did the family find were not acceptable to people in the earlier time period?

  • What other films have you seen that are based on card or board games?
