Finnick
What's the Story?
FINNICK follows Christine (Carmen Morales), a young girl who moves with her family to a new town where she discovers that their home is inhabited by Finnick (Ian Lara), a mischievous and distrustful magical creature who scares residents away by pretending to be a ghost. As Christine and Finnick are forced to work together, they uncover a larger threat facing the town, involving chaos, destruction, and a plan that puts people in danger. The story tracks how their uneasy partnership turns into cooperation as they try to protect the town and the people they care about.
Is It Any Good?
The film has a certain gentle charm, even if it never really surprises. Finnick feels like a familiar mashup of animated influences, like Minions meets the world of Monsters, Inc., with invisible house spirits and a human girl forming an unlikely partnership once the secret is out. The relationship between Finnick and Christine is sweet, and the arc about learning to cooperate feels earned, but the movie plays everything very safe, with animation that's serviceable rather than especially detailed, and supporting creatures that don't have much personality beyond their basic concept. It will likely work best for younger kids who just want something easy to follow, while older children and adults may find it predictable, a little dull, and oddly stiff at first, especially in the English dub as the voice performances seem to settle in.
