What's the Story?

In FROZEN HOT BOYS, Chom (Natapohn Tameeruks) feels like a failed artist, currently teaching at a juvenile detention center for teen boys. But soon she meets Jab, who seems like a nice kid with a surprising talent for sculpture. With some help from friends and Chom, Jab finds a passion he's genuinely good at, while other teens also find purpose and friendship.

Unfortunately, this movie is too long and too juvenile in tone. While some audiences might get more comedic mileage out of Frozen Hot Boys than others, it can't shake its adolescent representation. This fact combined with a nearly two-hour run time makes this comedy a bit of a slog to get through. The characters are earnestly depicted enough and the performances are adequate, but odd choices stand out. Choosing to show characters' past mistakes in brutally violent or serious fashion greatly clashes with the overall cheesy tone of the film.

Another misstep is Chom's backstory and development, which begins with her being a bit mischievous, only for the outcomes of her behavior not to really lead anywhere that interesting. The "revelation" she makes after everything is also not that revelatory but is treated like some very poignant moment. Perhaps some of these kinds of issues have to do with cultural differences. But the ways this film confuses trauma and "dark" and "serious" things for character development amidst a backdrop of a comedy make for a confusing watch.
