Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
GIOVANNI'S ISLAND follows the story of Junpei (voiced by Kannon Gowen), a young boy on the small island of Shikotan. Following Japan's defeat and just a few weeks before the end of World War II, Soviet soldiers arrive at Shikotan and occupy the island. Junpei's life is quickly impacted as he and the Japanese islanders find themselves under the oppression of the Soviet victors. Kicked out of their homes and forced to share schools with the Soviets, tempers quickly flare between the two cultures. However, despite the conflict, friendship, unity, and harmony are able to blossom between the Japanese and Russian children.
Is It Any Good?
This animated historical drama inspired by true events covers serious events in a mature and thought-provoking way. Giovanni's Island depicts the occupation of Shikotan Island by the Soviets following the end of World War II. Perseverance, compassion, understanding, and harmony are the prevailing themes of the film. Throughout, we see the conflict between the Japanese as the oppressed and the Soviets as the victors. The Japanese are forced to vacate their homes; they are forced to share their schools with the Soviets, and their food supply is low. Viewers see these events unfold through the eyes of Junpei, a young Japanese boy living on Shikotan. Junpei accounts how high the tensions were between the Japanese and Soviet children at first, often at conflict with each other. Despite this, over time the children of both nations come to better understand each other and build relationships with one another, embracing each other's cultures.
Junpei's friendship with Tanya, the Soviet commander's daughter, shines as an example of compassion and unity. Together, they form a strong connection that perseveres, showing that it's possible to find peace even in the face of great conflict.
