What's the Story?

The title's GIRL IN THE VIDEO is Krissy (Tia May Watts), 15 and cranky because her mom Mo (Cush Jumbo) won't let her go to a party. There are so many reasons—it's the middle of the week, Mom doesn't know the boy who's hosting, he's older, and finally, Krissy herself has never met him in person—he's an online connection. In an act of rebellion, Krissy sneaks out and is promptly attacked, bound, and dumped into a truck by a masked adult male. The police and FBI comb the internet and try to crack the kidnapper's encrypted online profile but get nowhere. The perp posts pay-per-view videos on the dark web of him raping and beating Krissy. The violence escalates and the perp lets Krissy know her days are numbered. Her brother makes a breakthrough discovery that points the authorities in the right direction. Will they get there before it's too late?

This is a well-paced, bare-bones police procedural of the kind Lifetime does well. The story is "inspired by true events," as are many popular streaming offerings that underscore the risks of living life online. These stories count on viewers' belief that terrible things can happen, and when they do, someone will make a movie about it. Use this disturbing cautionary tale to talk to your kids about online safety and the danger of online relationships.

  • What are some red flags that an online "friend" might not be who they claim to be?

  • If an online friend asks you to keep secrets from your family, what should you do?
