What's the Story?

Buck (Craig T. Nelson) has been dairy farming in traditional ways for as long as anyone can remember in GREEN AND GOLD. He's anticipating passing down the farm to his granddaughter, Jenny (Madison Lawlor), but she has other ideas. She's a gifted singer hoping to make a career out of her art. Meanwhile, milk prices have plummeted, and Buck is at risk of losing his farm to the bank. He makes a wager with the local banker to get an extra year to make a dent in his loan if the Green Bay Packers win. If they don't, the family could lose everything.

There's a lot to enjoy in this love letter to rural America, which offers a familiar story of generational change and features two strong lead actors. Nelson and Lawlor make a great pair in Green and Gold as the gruff, stubborn farmer and his loyal, hardworking granddaughter figuring out her own values and path. Annabel Armour and Ashton Moio are excellent in supporting roles as Buck's wife and Jenny's love interest, respectively.

Their natural surroundings are filmed with a loving eye for detail, from the swaying of grass to the corralling of farm animals to the changing light of the seasons. The film doesn't break new ground stylistically or narratively, but it's a pleasant watch with good intentions.

  • How do Buck and Jenny both demonstrate integrity over the course of the film? How does this serve them? How does it also close off some opportunities for each of them?

  • What messages does the film convey about traditional farming? Where could you go to find out more information about the challenges faced by farmers in the United States today?
