What's the Story?

In GROOM & TWO BRIDES, Adam (Abdullah Boushehri) is a nerdy young man so hopeless with women that he loses Sama (Lulwa Almulla), the love of his life, because he's misread her flighty enthusiasm as commitment. Brokenhearted, he studies and practices the art of seduction until he's an avid but nonchalant player who avoids attachment with a series of women. He becomes the master of the "it's-not-you-it's-me" break-up, gently dumping all who want him to commit. All is going well until Sama returns and begs him to marry. At the same time, his fabulously wealthy boss forces an engagement to his daughter Yasmine (Layla Abdallah), Adam's dreaded childhood acquaintance. Adam can't say no without risking his high-paying job. Adam uses his practiced ease to juggle both engagements. Just as he falls in love with the right person, one of them figures out the scam.

Is It Any Good?

Set against a world of fabulous wealth and privilege, Groom & Two Brides starts with a bang. Adam seems pleasantly amusing. Proud he's figured women out, he proceeds to set forth his "rules" on getting, keeping, and discarding them. His cluelessness and deceitfulness make him seem like a fool setting himself up for a fall. The fall comes, but, as in all romantic comedies, we root for him to wise up and learn something real about love.

Not enough is made of his mistaken notion that the way to be a man in the world is to date lots of women and dismiss them all. Ultimately, he seems like too nice a guy to sustain that pose. Many of the forced laughs come from his farcical running from one room to another in the vain effort to keep the women from meeting and putting two and two together.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the scenes in movies where we know if someone simply explains what is going on, the problem can be solved. Does this movie believably explain why Adam doesn't speak up and straighten everything out?

  • When Adam describes his rule for never allowing women to get attached to him, what kind of person does he paint himself to be? Do you like him?

  • The world of fabulous wealth Adam lives in is never mentioned. Fine restaurants, expensive cars, fancy parties, and world travel seem to be an unremarked on part of their lives. How would this story have been different if the characters weren't so privileged?
