What's the Story?
HE CALLS ME DAUGHTER is a faith-based documentary that captures the stories of women from all walks of life who are all connected by their histories of familial abuse, particularly at the hands of their fathers. The women discuss how their past experiences led to their having difficult relationships with God, but their stories illustrate how they ultimately restructured their relationship with God and found peace.
Is It Any Good?
This documentary might be great viewing for church groups and others who are intent on deepening their relationship with God. But He Calls Me Daughter might not work as well for viewers who want to see more therapeutic research related to healing family wounds. To its credit, the film doesn't completely separate science from religion. But it separates it enough that non-Christian viewers and viewers who want a more conventionally researched documentary might be skeptical.
Apart from the religious angle, He Calls Me Daughter can be a heavy watch, just from an emotional perspective. The way the stories are presented can feel like a relentless onslaught of pain and sadness without a break. It's a given that a film about abuse would be heavy, but the way the stories are presented increases the heaviness. The film is a spiritual sequel to Show Me the Father, but it isn't as focused on uplifting viewers as it is on presenting Christianity as the sole solution for healing emotional scars. If you're up for it, He Calls Me Daughter can provide the faithful with heartfelt testimonies. But make sure your mind is ready.

What audience do you think the film is targeted at? How can you tell? Do you think secular audiences will appreciate it as much as Christian ones?
How does the film encourage empathy and compassion? Why are those important character strengths?
