What's the Story?

In HEARTBREAK MOTEL, Ava Alessandra (Laura Basuki) is an up-and-coming star who finds herself in a relationship with her new co-star, Reza Malik (Reza Rahadian). But Reza turns out to be toxic, controlling, and more and more abusive. How will Ava escape, especially when the watchful eyes of the public are always on her?

Based on the novel by Ika Natassa, this adaptation might work better as a book. So much of what happens in Heartbreak Motel feels overly drawn out. Many scenes don't feel necessary, or they are repeats of previous scenes. There is simply too much here that could have been done in half the time. And at almost two hours long, cutting a solid half hour could have made for a more tense, taut, and entertaining watch. But beyond some ambiguity in the introduction, most everything is laid out by the middle point of the movie, such that the final third feels excessive.

Further, Reza's sudden 180 feels forced, and it comes early enough in Ava's relationship that many in her position would immediately end things. But, inexplicably, time cuts to five years later, and Ava is still with Reza, and their relationship continues to deteriorate. This is not to suggest that Ava is to blame for anything; rather, this is to note that Reza's deception and reveal of being a bad guy doesn't happen gradually at all. Also, friends and new partner Raga all advise Ava to simply seek out and re-meet the abusive father who beat her mom before leaving the family entirely. They think this is the best way to free Ava from the trauma and panic attacks that continue to afflict her.
