Hellboy: The Crooked Man
What's the Story?
HELLBOY: THE CROOKED MAN plunges Hellboy (Jack Kesy) into a 1950s Appalachian community dominated by witches and demons.
Is It Any Good?
An intriguing setup, this latest reboot of the Hellboy movies adapts an existing mini-series from the comics, where the half-demon, supernatural problem-solver is transported to 1950s Appalachia. But whereas previous Hellboy movie outings have been colorful, boisterous affairs, Hellboy: The Crooked Man never rises above being a dimly lit, bargain-basement offering. A few decent one-liners might've helped distract from its stretched-out plot, B-movie CGI monsters, and relentlessly shallow-focus camera work. But we get dialogue as stilted as its staging, which strands these under-drawn characters in a cinematic netherworld of a different kind. Adeline Rudolph manages to inject some much-needed energy into her sidekick role as agent Bobbie Jo Song, but like Kesy—now the third actor to play the hulking, crimson-skinned Hellboy—the script largely reduces her to an aid for exposition and repetition, rather than action and excitement. This Hellboy even suffers a downgrade in terms of his trademark smoking apparatus. Gone are the chunky, iconic cigars puffed on by Ron Perlman in the original Hellboy flick and its sequel, replaced by spindly cigarettes that seem to embody the franchise's dwindling resources and ambitions. Think hopeless, rather than hellish.
