What's the Story?

HOME COURT follows high school basketball phenom Ashley Chea from a 16-year-old sophomore to a graduate heading off to college. Ever since she was 5, she's been in love with basketball, practicing for hours on end just because she loved it so much. By the time she was in high school, she was one of Southern California's best ball handlers. Injury in her sophomore year kept her out for the entire season, but with grit and determination she made it back to captain for her junior year. Can Ashley and her family overcome physical pain and emotional pain to get another winning season?

This is an uplifting, sometimes moving, refreshingly honest documentary about an Asian American teen making waves in the world of elite high school basketball. Home Court follows Ashley Chea's triumphs and setbacks in the face of discrimination, prejudice, and little financial resources. Young hopefuls of all kinds, especially Asian American girls, will be inspired by Ashley's determination and grit. And they'll relate to the honest portrayal of Ashley and her family's emotional journey on a path that's anything but straight and easy.

The pacing flags a bit in the middle, when what should have been an exciting run of games starts to feel repetitive. But it's refreshing to see a marginalized group of athletes, and one shining star, defy expectations and take the basketball world by storm.
