I Can Only Imagine 2
What's the Story?
I CAN ONLY IMAGINE 2 continues the story of contemporary Christian band MercyMe's lead singer, Bart Millard (John Michael Finley), as he deals with personal crises and eventually collaborates with fellow faith-based singer-songwriter Tim Timmons (Milo Ventimiglia) on the Grammy-nominated song "Even If." In a flashback, Bart and his wife, Shannon (Sophie Skelton), learn that their young son, Sam (Jagger Amor), has Type 1 diabetes. More than a decade later, MercyMe's breakout hit "I Can Only Imagine" remains a commercial success, but Bart hasn't written another chart-topping single. Tension grows between Bart and a now-teenaged Sam (Sammy Dell), who wants more independence managing his condition, while Bart's anxiety as a father is driven by lingering trauma from his abusive childhood. When the band embarks on its first headlining tour, with Sam joining them on the road, they invite Christian singer-songwriter Tim to be the opening act. Tim, who's fascinated by the origins of hymns, mentors Sam's interest in music and encourages Bart to collaborate on a song that he believes will be stronger if they write it together, just like the hymns he's been studying.
Is It Any Good?
Like the original film, this uplifting faith-based sequel explores father-son drama and the origins of a popular Christian single. The storyline isn't as high-stakes as the original's was, but the screenplay by Brent McCorkle (who also co-directs) highlights how early success can lead to writer's block—and how life on the road can strain family relationships. As Tim Timmons, Ventimiglia is a welcome addition to the proceedings. Portrayed as an earnest prankster who draws an X on his wrist each day as a reminder to be grateful, Tim serves as an optimistic foil to Bart, who finds himself stuck in a fearful, pessimistic place about both his personal and professional struggles.
While popular in contemporary Christian circles, "Even If" wasn't the kind of crossover hit that "I Can Only Imagine" became, and the movie moves at a slightly slower pace than its predecessor did. Still, the cast—including Trace Adkins, who returns as the band's steadfast manager, Scott Brickell—and the film's positive themes are likely to resonate with Christian audiences. For secular moviegoers, the faith-based messages are less preachy than in many comparable films, with no extended church-set sermons. Instead, the religious content is focused on the music and the characters' relationships. Fans of the first film will likely appreciate this more nuanced, less dramatic sequel.
