What's the Story?

In ICE DRAGON: LEGEND OF THE BLUE DAISIES, a man named Nicholai (voiced by Bill Bray) tells the children of his town about a powerful song. The song was gifted to the people by "The great Giver of gifts," and anyone who believes in the magic of the song will be protected. Nicholai also tells the story of Dracon, a knight who was once sworn to love and protect the song. But Dracon began to abuse his authority and extract the power of the song for himself, leading him on a dark path, away from the light. Dracon strays so far that he becomes an ice dragon. ad the guardians of light banish Dracon to the depths of the Earth. As long as the townspeople believe in the power of the song, they will be protected from Dracon. But as time goes on, the townspeople forget. They start to view the legend of Dracon as a fable and ridicule Nicholai for continuing to believe. As their collective belief wanes, Dracon is awakened. His icy presence brings a snowstorm upon the village. Nicholai, his granddaughter Melody (Rheal Rees), and Melody's love interest, Leif (Justin Dubé), must convince the townspeople to believe in the song again before the ice dragon wreaks havoc and destruction.

This unremarkable animated fantasy tells the familiar story of a monster threatening to destroy a town and the brave few who intervene. Like the storyline, the animation in Ice Dragon: Legend of the Blue Daisies isn't particularly dynamic or innovative. The story takes place in a fictional, seemingly European village where the townspeople's accents range from Canadian to British to Scottish, but their skin colors suggest that they're of varying ethnicities. The movie's faith-based elements are diverse as well, with earth worshipping practices, a church-like structure, and an all-knowing "Giver." But however varied these practices may be, their heavy-handedness may be a deterrent for some. The highlights are the musical interludes, which are catchy and well-produced.
