What's the Story?

In INFLUENCERS, CW(Cassandra Naud) has moved on and lives a peaceful life with her girlfriend, but her past threatens to derail any sense of peace she might have carved out for herself. Madison (Emily Tennant), for one, is certainly looking for her, along with the authorities.

This sequel is not as good as the original. But there's still a lot going for Influencers, including a captivating cast, moments of dark hilarity, and violent set pieces committed with surprising ease. In these moments, where the characters are allowed to lean into the absurdity of what's happening right before their eyes, the film shines, and its satirical side gives the audience a peek, wink, and a nod, before retreating back to more normal thriller fare. For some, the climax won't be satisfying enough to justify the ramp up to it, but others will enjoy getting there.

Watching CW target self-absorbed media content creator celebrities prompts a certain vicarious glee in seeing horrible people have their lives messed with and even ended, before we realize that in many ways, these people are also victims, becoming laborers and tools for the always performative, always on, social media machine. It's a shame that this sequel couldn't stick the landing as strongly as the first movie. Twenty minutes longer than the original, Influencers feels self-indulgent, and its runtime really could have been slimmed down.
