What's the Story?

In INSPECTOR ZENDE, Inspector Zende (Manoj Bajpayee) is a police officer dedicated to tracking down and capturing a serial killer on the loose. This movie comedically dramatizes his now legendary real-life take-down of one of history's most notorious killers.

Is It Any Good?

Our review:

Unfortunately, this movie simply isn't enjoyable. First, the humor in Inspector Zende is surprisingly juvenile. Wit, cleverness, punchlines this is not. And combined with this comedy's family film tone, the silly humor reduces this celebrated character (Zende) to a caricature of who the man must be in real life. The overly lighthearted tone of the film also simplifies and almost lampoons the seriousness or severity of what really happened in history, which was that a serial killer likely killed over 20 women while escaping justice many times. Playing Zende, Manoj Bajpayee does quite well with very little to work with. But there's just not enough here to sustain the entirety of the film's almost two-hour runtime. Throw in casual sexism, no strongly drawn female characters, and bad writing, and there's not much here to stick around for.

The other glaring problem with this film is that its tone is just odd. The choice is understandable, perhaps, in that it would make sense to lean into comedy to try to reduce the seriousness of the subject matter. The issue, however, is that if not done correctly, the two genres can end up clashing greatly. Characters are joking around; meanwhile, a killer is literally getting away with murder. This movie will then show the violence of the killer's killings, and then easily jump back to juvenile humor. The tone, the vibe, the world created here just doesn't fit the seriousness of its real-world inspiration.
