What's the Story?

JOY is the story of three remarkable individuals, who collectively invented IVF treatment, to allow couples all around the world to conceive and have children. Facing pushback from the church and sections of the public, nurse Jean Purdy (Thomasin McKenzie), scientist Robert Edwards (James Norton), and surgeon Patrick Steptoe (Bill Nighy) persevere in their fight for the greater good.

Kids say ( 1 ):

This is a film whose tone perfectly aligns with its title. Joy is a truly charming and tender British drama that will warm your heart. The fact that it's based on a real events, with real-life characters, only adds to the magic. That's not to say the film doesn't shy away from conflict. It's not all straight-forward and rosy for our three persevering leads, with that joy needing to be earned. It's also a story that will be relatable to a great deal of people, who will have endured this emotional rollercoaster in their own lives. The script is partly co-written by writer Jack Thorne and his wife, Rachel Mason, who both went on their own IVF journey, as did director Ben Taylor, all of which adds a personal touch to the tale that concludes with an emotional and impactful pay-off. What's more, the science—a vital part of this story—is presented in a way that's easy to understand and not overwhelming, making this a feel-good movie for teens and adults alike.
