A Lot or a Little?
The parents' guide to what's in this movie.
What Parents Need to Know
Parents need to know that Justin Bieber: Our World shows the popular singer in a new and positive phase in his life. He's lived through very public troubles and has come out on the other side a happily married, settled, and hardworking professional. He sings about all of this, as well as his love for his wife, Hailey. Some songs address relationships and attractions, describe kisses, or talk about love. The diverse cast of bandmates and concert crew members talk about Bieber's loyalty and personal growth, and they express gratitude that he's providing them work even during a pandemic. Of course, the Biebers are also very wealthy and receive special treatment wherever they go. The film will appeal to Bieber's current fans and could inspire interest in his albums and concerts, as well as some of the labels he noticeably wears or uses, including Nike, Calvin Klein, Drew, and Tesla. The singer and crew drink champagne to celebrate New Year's Eve. Language includes "s--t," "bitch," "hell," "idiot," and a bleeped-out use, presumably, of "f--k."

What's the Story?
JUSTIN BIEBER: OUR WORLD goes backstage as the singer and his extensive crew prepare for his first full concert after a three-year hiatus. The New Year's Eve 2020 concert, held at the height of Covid's early outbreak, involved daily testing for everyone involved in putting on the show. A massive stage and light show was constructed on a rooftop so 240 invited guests could watch from socially-distanced hotel balconies. Bieber records himself and his wife as they prepare for the big day, and members of the production and band are interviewed about their experience working with Bieber in the past and on this live-streamed event.
Is It Any Good?
The latest in a long line of documentaries about Justin Bieber shows the singer all grown up and enjoying a period of personal stability and creative productivity. Justin Bieber: Our World films the behind-the-scenes preparations, starting one month out, for an exclusive New Year's Eve concert in 2020. The chronological sequences are interspersed with scenes from the concert, sometimes in an overlapping way -- for example, showing the rehearsal of choreography with the performance of the same number. As a historical document, the film will provide one record of Covid's impact on the music industry. Crew and band members repeatedly express gratitude that they have work; the lead choreographer has to quarantine when he tests positive for the virus. The concert itself was set up in such a way that small groups watched live from isolated hotel balconies while the rest of the world streamed the event from home.
The film also captures a new moment in the already well-documented life of the celebrity, often at hand-held distance as he "vlogs" his own preparations for the concert. He's accompanied by his model wife, who, among other things, sees to it that their bedroom is properly humidified to soothe his vocal cords. A slightly odd scene involves Bieber telling his wife a story about putting out a house fire with the mere sound of his singing. He isn't the only one extolling his virtues. It's surprisingly touching to hear people who've been with the singer for more than a decade talk about his friendship and reflect on his growth. Bieber might sing about being "Lonely," but this film takes pains to show how his relationships have contributed to his music, performances, and life.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about how Bieber has evolved over the years as a musician and a person, as seen in the many documentaries and shows about him, including this latest, Justin Bieber: Our World.
The film weaves back and forth between the concert preparations and the concert itself. Would you have preferred to watch the concert uninterrupted? What did you think of this construction?
What kinds of special precautions had to be taken due to Covid in the making of this film and the putting on of the concert?
