K-POPS!
What's the Story?
In K-POPS!, Bobby "The Breeze" Johnson (Anderson .Paak) is ready for the world to recognize his musical talents when he's hired to play drums with the house band on South Korea's hit TV music competition series, Wildcard. But after he strikes up a friendship with a tween contestant (Soul Rasheed) who really reminds BJ of himself, he realizes that a part of him has been in Seoul all along. Cast and cameos include Jonnie "Dumbfoundead" Park, Diplo, Vernon, Jaden Smith, Saja Boy Kevin Woo, Saweetie, and The Rose.
Is It Any Good?
Exuberantly fresh and humorously energetic, .Paak's feature directing and writing debut shows that the Grammy winner's creativity goes well beyond music. In K-POPS!, what could have been a serious drama about an immature musician reconnecting with his son through their shared love of music becomes a pretty entertaining comedy with a solid, catchy soundtrack and eye-catching dance moves. The film benefits from .Paak's goofy, confident style (think Kevin Hart) and impressive music connections. And as BJ imparts musical insights to the young Wildcard contestants—like how to scat and how to dance—kids who are watching might end up feeling a little smarter and more confident.
The movie's kids'-sitcom-esque premise isn't terribly realistic, given that no one is too mad at BJ's ex/Tae's mom for not telling the two about each other's existence, and BJ and Tae Young vibe instantly. But the script's playfulness and animated sequences make it clear that K-POPS! isn't really a story about the reality of family, it's more about the fantasy of how fun family can be. And then it takes things a step further, since we're watching a creative collaboration between a real-life father and son, reminding viewers that family activities can take many forms.
Talk to Your Kids About ...
Families can talk about the fact that K-POPS! is a movie made by real-life family members and friends. If your family made a movie, what shared interest could you make it about, and who would write, direct, and star in it?
What is a "fish out of water" story? How are viewers invited to see and learn about South Korea through BJ's experiences as a newcomer?
How does the movie spotlight heritage and identity? Why is diverse representation in the media important?
How does the story show the importance of communication and perseverance?
