What's the Story?

LA CHA CHA follows lone traveler Solti Buttering (Liam Hourican) as he is drawn into life on a quirky, remote holiday park.

This is one of those movies that is deserving in praise for the determination of its makers rather than the end product. La Cha Cha Cha is the lockdown-era brainchild of writer-director Kevin Allen, who enlists brother Keith and a raft of celebrity friends to swell the movie's cast with a few starry cameos. Don't expect to see the famous faces on the movie poster taking up much screen time, though. The story is half-powered by Hourican's unassuming wanderer Solti taking up residence on the faltering, bohemian holiday park run for and with eccentric seniors. There he meets endless kooky supporting players and put-upon co-owner Libby (Ruby Ashbourne Serkis), who faces the predictable conundrum of how to keep her park from falling into the wrong hands.

Ashbourne Serkis does the best job of trying to sell what quickly becomes a sluggish, muddled story. The movie stays trapped somewhere between a sketch show and a romcom, with none of the characters compelling -- or funny -- enough to keep the viewer invested. A few half-decent jokes are tossed into the mix, but the cast and crew probably had more fun escaping being shut indoors than anyone is likely to have watching this.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

  • Families can talk about the violence in La Cha Cha. Did the comedic tone make it feel less impactful? Why, or why not? Does exposure to violent media desensitize kids to violence?

  • There's lots of strong language used in the movie. What did it contribute to the story? Is a certain level of language expected in a film like this? If so, why?

  • How was drinking, smoking, and drug use depicted in the movie? Were they glamorized? Did the characters need to do these things? Were there consequences?

  • How did the movie portray sex and relationships? Was it affectionate? Respectful? Parents, talk to your teens about your own values regarding sex and relationships.

  • How did the remote setting add to the story?
