Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna
Parent and Kid Reviews
What's the Story?
Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna documents the circumstances surrounding the 2021 on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and director Joel Souza. The film shows camera footage from the set of Rust and the first responders arriving at the scene following the accident. There is also footage from police interrogations, details of events leading up to the fatal shooting, and findings of the criminal investigations after. People involved in the film, including Souza and several members of the cast, talk about the trauma of the incident and what completing Rust and premiering it in 2024 meant to them.
Is It Any Good?
This documentary avoids rubber-necking a tragedy but maintains viewers' attention with impressive behind-the-scenes and archive footage, first-hand interviews, and a notable tension. Last Take: Rust and the Story of Halyna is informative enough to interest even those who paid close attention to every detail of the case behind the shooting that killed Hutchins. For those who didn't follow the case, the film packs significant first-hand information and reactions from the people involved. Not everyone sat for an interview, but their voices are still here. It's hard not to feel affected by the unnecessary death on the film's set. Missing are more biographical details about Halyna herself.
