What's the Story?

LIGHTS tells the story of Hanukkah, its origin and history, and the true meaning behind it. One day playful and vibrant lights, in the form of letters, fall from the sky, bringing life and joy to the people of Jerusalem. But when the Greeks invade the land, they strive to get rid of all of the lights and bring in their own alphabet.

This educational short film serves as a useful introduction for young children to the origins of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah. Lights delves into history, including some of the conflict and persecution the Jewish community faced, but does so in an age-appropriate manner. It should be noted that the animation looks dated. However, its positive messages extend beyond the Jewish community, with universal themes about being proud of one's identity and cultural heritage. The film's skillful use of metaphor and symbolism effectively tells a complete story in a short time frame—just 24 minutes.
